Is fun and games only for the young? A Bangalore based group of youngsters Volunteer for a Cause (VFC) believe age has nothing to do with one's wish to play, sing or dance. And they proved that belief true during a recently organised festival for the elderly from various old age homes in the city.
The group conducts regular fun activities and games at different old age homes across the city. They try to ensure the elders are engaged mentally, physically, and socially and hope to help them maintain optimum health and not fall into depression, isolation and the risk of developing dementia. 'Hiriyara Jaatre' (Elders' Fest) was organised since 2017 with 90 participants. The goal was to create a rural festive atmosphere for the elders living in old age homes across the city, away from their near and dear, often abandoned by the family.
In 2019, the number grew to an impressive 300 seniors singing and dancing and playing, reliving their childhood and spending the day with young volunteers.
The group wanted to bring elders from various old age homes under a single roof and gift them a much deserving fun day and lasting memories. Senior citizens from various homes participate in the annual event.
A noble cause, with generous donations, the group hopes to organise more such events for those forgotten by their own.
